Charter Background


The Halton Food Charter, one of the first initiatives of the Halton Food Council (HFC), was endorsed by Halton Region on December 14, 2011. By April 2013, the Charter had been endorsed by all four municipalities in Halton - Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville.



February 2010: The HFC began work to develop the Halton Food Charter.

April to August 2010: A draft charter was developed and went through public consultation that included participants attending the 2009 Food Forum.

November 16, 2010: The Charter was revised and approved by the HFC. The Charter was shared with community members as a resource in their work to promote activities to achieve “expected outcomes” identified in the charter.

September 6, 2011: The HFC presented the Charter to the Halton Regional Council - Health and Social Services Committee requesting endorsement. Regional Council asked for additional community consultation.

September 2011 to November 2011: Public consultation on the Halton Food Charter was held. No further changes were recommended.

December 14, 2011: The Halton Food Charter was approved by Halton Region.

September 2012 to April 2013: The Halton Food Charter was endorsed by the four municipalities.

June 2013: Community members and organizations are encouraged to endorse the Halton Food Charter.
